If you've ever wondered why some chargers charge your Nothing Phone faster than others, the answer lies in the loading protocols. USB PD (Power Delivery) and PPS (Programmable Power Supply) are two key technologies in fast charging, but they often cause confusion.
In this article (based on the Excellent explanation by RohitPakalapati), we explain what they are, how they work and why choosing the right charger can make all the difference in the speed and loading safety of your device.
What is USB PD?
USB Power Delivery (PD) It is a fast charging standard that allows devices and chargers communicate to select the optimal power level.
In the past, traditional USB charging only offered 5V, This was sufficient for older devices, but insufficient for modern smartphones with high-capacity batteries. USB PD, This limitation was overcome by introducing higher voltage levels, such as 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V.

This means your Nothing Phone and the charger negotiate a suitable voltage level for maximize loading speed without compromising safety. For example, if your device supports fast charging of 18W, The charger can be adjusted to 9V to optimize the process.
However, USB PD has a limitationIt only works with fixed voltage levels. This may not be the most efficient way to supply power in all situations.
What is PPS and why is it an improvement on USB PD?
PPS (Programmable Power Supply) It is an advanced feature within the standard. USB PD 3.0. Unlike conventional USB PD, which works with predefined voltages, PPS allows for dynamic adjustments in small increments in real time.
Imagine a smart faucet:
- If you need to fill a glass, it provides a steady and moderate flow.
- If you fill a bucket, increases flow to speed up the process.
- When the bucket is almost full, reduces flow to avoid spills.
PPS works similarly, adjusting the voltage throughout the entire charging cycle for minimize energy loss in the form of heat. This translates into a More efficient and safer charging, This is key for the Nothing Phone, which seeks to balance battery performance and durability.
Why is PPS important?
When the load is carried out on a incorrect or too fast voltage, is generated heat, which is detrimental to both loading speed and battery life.
That's why modern devices implement protection mechanisms that slow down the charging process when too much heat is detected.
PPS solves this problem by intelligently adjusting the power.. As a result:
- Heat generation is reduced.
- The loading speed is maintained without risk.
- The long-term health of the battery is improved.
Without PPS, Your Nothing Phone will continue to charge quickly, but not in the most efficient way possible.

Fast charging on the Phone (3a) Series
He Nothing Phone (3a) It is compatible with fast charging via USB PD and PPS. This is one of the reasons why Nothing has opted for an optimized charging ecosystem, offering their own chargers such as the Nothing 45W.
If you use a charger PPS compatible (like Nothing or any other with USB-C PD 3.0 and PPS), you will get:
- Unlimited charging speed.
- Less heat generation.
- Better long-term battery preservation.
If you use a charger without PPS, The phone will continue to charge quickly, but it will not reach its maximum efficiency potential.

Here's another selection of recommended chargers with 65W PPS technology:
If you want the better charging experience for your Nothing Phone, Ideally, you should choose a charger that supports this technology. This will ensure you get a fast, efficient and safe charging, extending your battery life and ensuring the improved performance for your device.

Joaquín
I have a Nothing A4. What chargers currently available on the market would be the best for it? Thanks.
ruudhesp
Hi Joaquín, I've updated the links, they were outdated, sorry. The (4a) charger supports up to 50W charging. In the link, I've included several 45W or 65W options from well-known brands with the appropriate technology for Nothing and CMF phones.
Joaquín
Thank you very much. I've tried the Baseus brand and it works perfectly.

Thanks for your message, Joaquín! I'm glad things are going well for you! 😀

I bought the Ugreen Nexode 65W after reading this ad, but it only charges my Nothing 3A at 5 or 7W, and I don't know why. I'm wondering if I should return it and ask you for a charger that charges much faster. Thanks.
ruudhesp
Hi! That's strange!
Check in Battery Status that you do not have "Smart charging mode" activated, as it limits the speed to protect the battery.
It's also important that the USB cable is good quality and compatible with the speed of your phone and charger. Not just any USB cable will do. Use the one that came with your phone; that should work.
Let's hope for the best!
JOSE SANCHEZ FORTUN MILLAN
I will, thank you.
