Interview with Sélim Benayat and the future of Nothing with AI

Entrevista a Sélim Benayat y el futuro de Nothing con la IA

Yesterday it may Read the interview that Adam Bowman, the observer of the Nothing Community, made to Sélim Benayat, the company's AI product team leader. I've always followed the career of Nothing, But this conversation gave me a much clearer and, I must confess, quite exciting view of the direction they are taking.

Sélim is not your typical product leader. His background in biophysics and robotics gives him a unique perspective on how technology should interact with the physical world. And that shows in his vision. It's not just about adding AI to a phone, but about build an AI software company within a hardware company.

Software and hardware integration: the complete loop

For me, this is the big move. By controlling both hardware and software, Nothing can design what Sélim calls a "complete loop." This allows them to thoroughly optimize key factors like privacy, latency, and battery life, without the limitations of working with third parties. The goal isn't to keep up with the competition, but create experiences that, once you use them, seem obvious and natural. This, in my opinion, is what distinguishes true innovators.

Beyond models: the importance of systems

Another point I found very interesting was his opinion on the current state of AI. Sélim argues that the industry is changing. The focus is no longer on creating the "largest language models," but on building "better systems." As models reach their limits, real innovation moves to the orchestration: the ability of AI to use tools, manage memory, and act efficiently.

Sélim explains it with a very simple metric: the completion rate. The key is not how intelligent the AI is in a benchmark, but How often does the system convert an intention into a result with the least possible friction?. This practical, user-centered approach is undoubtedly the right path for AI to become truly useful in our daily lives. It's not about AI that gives you an answer, but about AI that acts for you.

The future of devices: beyond the phone

The interview also made me reflect on the future of devices. Although Sélim was clear that Nothing isn't trying to replace the phone, he does see a role for related devices. He talks about the phone becoming a mediator, which coordinates with other sensors and devices, such as headphones, watches, or glasses. Instead of an app-centric experience, we would have a results-centric one, with AI choosing the best path to complete a task.

Nothing's active exploration of AI hardware, and Sélim's mention that they'll be discussing it further early next year, strikes me as a clear statement of intent. It demonstrates that the brand isn't afraid to innovate and is ready to shape the future of technology. The creation of Essential's account on X (formerly Twitter) to connect more directly with the community is proof that they are listening and want to co-create that future with their users.

In short, Nothing's vision for AI isn't the typical "more and more technology" approach. It's a vision that prioritizes simplicity, efficiency, and, above all, real-world utility. It's a pragmatic approach that, in my opinion, has a much greater chance of success than the flashier but less functional proposals we've seen so far.
