Nothing Essential Apps: everything that's changed and what's coming soon

Nothing Essential Apps

Nothing continues to make progress with Essential Apps, one of the most distinctive software features it has introduced in recent months. The company has now shared an update on the project , explaining what its team has been working on over the past year, why it decided to rebuild part of the experience, and, most importantly, when we can expect it to become more widely available.

The proposal remains quite interesting: the ability to create our own widgets using artificial intelligence without needing to know how to program. But beyond the initial idea, Nothing assures us that it has dedicated a significant amount of time to ensuring these widgets are truly useful, function well within Android, and maintain an aesthetic consistent with its devices.

Essential Apps wants to make the home screen more personal

Essential Apps is easy to understand. The user describes the widget they want to create, either by typing or using voice commands, and the tool generates a proposal. It's also possible to attach reference images to better illustrate the style or idea you have in mind.

This allows you to create anything from purely informational widgets, like a clock or a sports schedule, to small interactive elements or simply designs intended to personalize your home screen. The company gives examples such as a tic-tac-toe game, a sticky note, or even purely visual widgets.

Currently, there are 2x2, 2x4, and 2x5 formats, although this is precisely one of the areas that Nothing wants to expand before the general launch.

A year of changes since the first tests

Essential Apps began testing with the first alpha users in January 2026. That phase served to test how far the idea could go, but it also made it clear that there was a lot of work ahead.

During those first few months, hundreds of widgets were created, and Nothing compiled data on how testers used them. In February, a competition was also organized for students, in which Kuber Mehta's Hacker News Digest widget stood out, an example of the possibilities the tool could offer when put in the hands of creative users.

After that first stage, the team decided to work on the project again and rebuild Essential Apps to turn that prototype into a product ready for a much larger community.

One of the most significant changes has been moving the entire process to mobile. It will no longer be necessary to go between a website and your phone: the idea is that we can create, modify, and add the widget directly from our Nothing app.

Artificial intelligence will be a key part

Nothing also claims to have worked for months on improving the agent responsible for generating the widgets. The goal is not only for it to be able to create something that works, but also for it to better understand what we're asking for and generate designs that fit naturally with Nothing's aesthetic.

This is probably where one of the most interesting parts of the experience lies. Asking for something like a pixel art clock or a hand-drawn weather icon sounds simple, but making the result visually compelling is another story. That's precisely why the company is working on improving the quality of the graphics it generates.

Integration with Android and Nothing's native apps has also been improved. Widgets can connect to elements such as calendars, contacts, and gallery, and can also use information from the internet to display data such as sports scores or travel information.

This makes Essential Apps go a little beyond being a simple design generator: the intention is that the widgets can be useful in everyday life.

It will arrive with Nothing OS 5.0, but not for everyone at first.

The new Essential Apps builder will be integrated into Nothing OS 5.0, though it will initially remain in closed beta. Nothing will continue adding users over the next few weeks, so those on the waiting list should keep an eye on their email.

The company's current goal is to open Essential Apps to all Nothing phone users during the first quarter of 2027, provided that testing progresses as planned.

In other words, we'll still have to wait a few months to see the version that's truly open to everyone.

Playground takes a break

Another interesting aspect of this update is Playground, the space where the community can discover widgets, toys for Glyph, camera settings, or equalizer profiles created by other users.

During the Essential Apps alpha, it was also possible to publish widgets for others to use. However, Nothing reached a conclusion after those initial tests: creating a marketplace makes more sense when the widget-building tool is sufficiently mature and the quality of the community's creations is high.

For this reason, the publication of new widgets on Playground has been temporarily paused. Nothing plans to resume this feature in 2027 and, before the end of 2026, says it will publish some of the widgets created by users during testing.

More possibilities before the final launch

Between now and the general release of Essential Apps, Nothing still has several projects underway. The company wants the builder to be able to support a wider range of ideas, expand the number of available formats and sizes, and significantly improve the visual quality of the generated elements.

They're also testing new ways to create widgets. Describing what we want with text is just one possibility, and Nothing is experimenting with other ways to build them to make the process more intuitive and engaging.

And perhaps therein lies the key to this whole project. The idea of creating an AI-powered widget might grab your attention for a few minutes, but for Essential Apps to make sense within Nothing OS, it will have to deliver a useful, attractive, and reliable enough experience that we'd actually want to keep it on our home screen.

For now, it seems Nothing has chosen to delay the general launch and dedicate this last year to building a more solid foundation. We'll have to see if all this work manages to turn Essential Apps into something more than just a novelty.
