The ultimate guide to customizing the Essential Space button on your Nothing Phone

essential space grabar llamadas

Nothing's ecosystem is distinguished by its focus on functional design and the usability of its Glyph interface. However, we encounter a significant limitation: Nothing does not officially allow remapping the "Essential Key" button, leaving us exclusively with the default options focused on Essential Space. If you're someone who prefers to decide exactly what each interaction with your device does, today I'm bringing you a solution to bypass that restriction and take full control. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank... Aresu_style for providing me with this tutorial.

It is important to emphasize that this is a procedure unrelated to Nothing. Although the brand doesn't give us the freedom to choose the function of this physical button as standard, the community always finds ways.

Preparing the environment with Termux

The first step is to prepare the console that will allow us to communicate with the system at a deeper level. You must install Termux (Available on Google PlayOnce inside the terminal, it is essential to install the necessary Android tools by running the code:

pkg install android-tools

From here, the process focuses on enabling internal communication permissions. You need to go to your phone's settings and enter Software Information, then tap repeatedly on the Build Number. Once activated, Developer options, make sure to enable both USB debugging like the Wireless debugging.

Wireless local ADB connection

Within the wireless debugging settings, select the "Pair device with sync code" option. You will see an IP address and a 5-digit port. In Termux, type the following command (replacing the X's with your port) and enter the access code requested by the terminal:

adb pair localhost:XXXXX

Once paired, return to the main wireless debugging screen. You'll see a port under "IP Address and Port" (which is usually different from the previous one). Run the following code:

adb connect localhost:XXXXX

If the message confirms the connection, you now have "permission" to modify the system's behavior without touching a single cable.

Disabling native functions and remapping

To stop the button from executing its factory functions and free it up for our creativity, we must disable the Nothing processes by running these two commands:

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.nothing.ntessentialspace
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0com.nothing.ntessentialrecorder

With this, the button will stop responding. Now, discharge KeyMapper from Google Play. When you open the app, tap the "+" icon and select "record trigger". Press the physical button on your Nothing and you'll see it detects it as an unknown key code. Now you just have to go to the actions menu and assign it whatever you want: open the camera, turn on the flashlight, or even run a custom shortcut.

In the absence of an official method…

From my point of view, although this is not an official method and requires a little patience, it is totally worth it. if you don't use Essential Space. This isn't my case since I use it regularly, but it must be frustrating to have a dedicated physical button and not be able to use it for what you really need in your day-to-day life.

Thanks to tools like Termux and KeyMapper, we can "correct" that lack of freedom that Nothing has left out, turning a limited button into a real productivity tool.
