Nothing breaks the back-to-routine routine for many (yes, our holidays are over) with the official announcement of Nothing OS 5.0. The London firm hasn't just updated the operating system base to the latest version from Google; it has completely rewritten how the phone feels, looks, and responds in your hand.
You can see the meticulous work done to perfect the daily details: from the arrival of a new typeface that improves readability, to the integration of truly useful artificial intelligence and a much more flexible visual control.
Redesigned
Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a broader visual redesign across the entire system. Typography, icons, spacing, materials, and motion have all been refined across the settings screen, status bar, camera, gallery, widgets, and system controls.
New system typography
The source is introduced Geist such as the system's new typeface. It helps balance clarity, character, and consistency. It improves readability in the daily interface while giving Nothing OS a clearer and more distinctive visual character. Combined with refinements to text scaling, spacing, and hierarchy, it creates a more consistent visual language across the settings screen, widgets, menus, and other parts of the OS, making navigation easier while keeping the Nothing experience true to life.
Redesigned settings
The settings screen has been redesigned with new icons, updated spacing and corner shapes, and more consistent layouts. Information is grouped more clearly, giving frequently used categories dedicated entries to make settings easier to scan and navigate.
Cleaner status bar
The system icons have been custom-designed with more expressive animations. Signal, Wi-Fi, battery, and other indicators are clearer and more consistent, while subtle animations provide immediate feedback when their states change.
Camera updates
The camera introduces updated icons, cleaner controls, and smoother movement, making it easier to identify important settings without distracting from the frame. QR code scanning is also easier to use: once the code is recognized, the result remains in a fixed position instead of moving with the image in the frame, providing a stable target to tap without having to realign or rescan.
Updates to the Nothing Gallery app
The main Photos view now lets you sort by "Recently Added" or "Capture Date," remembering your selection between sessions. You can also filter by "All, Favorites, Edited, Photos, Videos, or Screenshots," combining sorting and filtering. The Albums page has been redesigned: frequently used albums are more prominently displayed, while less frequently used albums appear in a smaller lower section.
ADVERTISING
You can press and hold an album to reorder it or move it between sections, or use edit mode to manage multiple albums at once. Transparent details also appear in parts of the Gallery to blend in with the overall design language.
Deeper personalization
Nothing OS 5.0 takes customization beyond simply adding more options. The idea is to give you more freedom to shape the experience to your liking, while keeping the system consistent and recognizable. Adaptive wallpaper colors, new lock screen styles, widgets, and easier home screen editing are all built on this foundation.
Redesigned home screen
A new theme introduces transparent details to widgets and the search bar to add depth and layers, extending the same Material Design language to proprietary experiences like the Gallery. App icons receive subtle color tints based on your wallpaper.
Widgets can use adaptive color alongside transparent details, while the 1x1 quick settings widgets use colors more prominently drawn from the background. When the background changes, these elements update. It will be available as an add-on theme alongside the existing Nothing OS style. (It will arrive with the general launch)
Lock screen customization
There are two new watch faces and more color options. Gooey It offers a bold and fun look with fluid shapes and a stronger personality. Micrographics takes inspiration from the graphic language of our hardware, bringing the things you need throughout the day into one glanceable clock face. Date, time, weather and upcoming meetings are brought together through a distinctive, mechanical-inspired typographic style. You can also choose clock face colours from your wallpaper.
Improvements to wallpapers with depth
The depth effect provides greater control over the composition, allowing you to reposition and scale the image around the clock and other information. If the image doesn't fill the available area, the blur and translucency effects extend it to the edges without leaving gaps.
Easier editing of the home screen
Batch editing of the home screen streamlines design changes. Instead of moving each icon or widget individually, you can select multiple items and move them together, even between different pages.
Widget Away Time
Track the periods you put your phone down to help you see how your screen time changes. Instead of setting limits or blocking apps, the widget lets you see patterns in your own behavior, such as your longest breaks or how often you step away.
Widget Collector
A fun way to turn things you love into visual collections. Capture something with your camera or choose a photo from your Gallery, then save, organize, and display those items on your home and lock screens (coffee, sneakers, model kits, game consoles, bikes, cakes, or anything else).
Dedicated app for the Glyph interface and Glyph Timer widget
The Glyph interface now has its own dedicated app. Supported features, sounds, ringtones, and schedules are all unified in one place instead of being scattered throughout Settings.
ADVERTISING
You can now start a countdown directly from your home screen using a new widget. Once started, the Glyph light on the back of your phone visually displays the remaining time to track your progress without turning on the screen.
Faster and smoother
Nothing OS 5.0 improves everyday interactions, including app launches, scrolling, touch response, multitasking, and background app behavior. Smarter background management allocates more resources to the app you're actively using while keeping frequently used apps ready in the background, reducing unnecessary reloads.
More natural animations
Supported animations respond when you reverse direction mid-interaction. If you start opening something and then reverse course, the animation follows your gesture instead of finishing the original movement first. This applies to apps, folders, widgets, multitasking, shortcuts, and status bar icons.
Faster Bluetooth controls
They have been redesigned in Quick Settings, making nearby devices easier to find and allowing you to connect or disconnect compatible devices with a single tap without opening the full Bluetooth Settings page.
Essential Voice
It's faster and offers cleaner, better-formatted transcripts. It better understands when speech should remain a paragraph and when it should become a list, separating tasks, requirements, or ideas into clearer points. Real-time transcription displays the words as you speak. Real-time translation will be included soon. Additionally, with Ear (3), audio can be captured directly through the Super Mic using the earbud case.
Essential Space
It simplifies the capture and organization of information. Using the Essential key to capture content is simpler and more consistent.
Collections
They help organize scattered captures with less manual effort. After you create and name a collection, Essential Space analyzes your existing captures and recommends relevant content to add. It also suggests related content as you capture new things and can proactively propose creating a new collection when it recognizes a common theme among several captures.
Support for Model Context Protocol (MCP)
It allows compatible AI platforms to search and read selected information from your Essential Space. For the initial release, MCP support is read-only, so tools cannot write or modify your data. It will be available on Google Play in October.
Essential Apps on your phone
Essential Apps Builder's creator comes directly to your phone as an app. You can describe the tool you need in natural language, preview your creation, fine-tune it, and deploy it to your home screen without writing any code. It's currently in beta with phased access.
Separate Notifications and Quick Settings
You can now choose to separate Notifications and Quick Settings into dedicated panels. With split mode enabled, swipe down from the left to open Notifications and from the right to open Quick Settings. If you prefer the existing combined layout, you can continue using it.
Quick Share
It makes sharing files between different ecosystems easy. It generates a QR code for what you're sharing, and the other person can scan it with their camera (whether it's an iPhone or another Android phone) to open a secure web link and download the files without needing an extra app.
Improved screen recording
It uses a floating action capsule, keeping recording controls within easy reach while using your phone.
Clearer privacy indicators
The status bar introduces a three-color indicator system: green highlights sensitive access, blue indicates location usage, and yellow shows AI data processing.
Location permission updates
Clearer notifications about when an app requests your location and what level of access you are granting.
ADVERTISING
Live Updates in the status bar
Compatible apps can display active updates as capsules directly in the status bar (up to two at a time), and tapping one expands it to its corresponding notification.
I note 3D Emoji
It introduces a more three-dimensional and expressive look to supported emojis, including the latest Unicode additions.
Extended Dark Theme
Extend the dark theme to more apps, including those that don't offer their own full dark theme. You can control it app by app from "Settings > Display > Dark theme > Extended".
Assistant volume
Digital assistants have their own independent volume control separate from the overall media volume, accessible from "Settings > Sound and vibration".
Enhanced HDR Brightness
It allows you to make HDR photos and videos look brighter and more vivid without increasing the brightness of the entire interface from "Settings > Display > Enhanced HDR Brightness".
Recent apps updated
Introduce a pill-shaped menu at the top of each app card to facilitate actions such as split screen or app information.
Open beta and availability
The Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta begins on August 26 at 11:00 BST, starting with the Phone (3). More compatible devices will be added in the following months. The redesigned launcher and Micrographics watch face are still in development and will arrive with the general release in October.
